Tech for Good - A city of SMARTS

Wednesday 26th May 2021 11:00am - 2:00pm NZDT
Where  Basestation, 148 Durham Street, Tauranga View Map
SMART cities are not just about technology.
They’re about smart people, transforming people’s way of life and that includes you.
Commissioners of Tauranga City Council have told us recently, "Tauranga needs a story" and "Tauranga needs to be community-led".
They are right and it is your SMARTS and wisdom that will make both happen.
Join the Venture Centre community at this event and together, let's begin to demonstrate what Tauranga's most unacknowledged resource, our SMART people, can do and contribute.
Our city is under increasing pressure from two directions: population growth and the rapidly changing expectations of our citizens who face local, national and global challenges.
Our SMART local people have the opportunity to be at the centre of co-designing a future that will work for all of us – enhancing people’s lives, creating liveable environments and connecting the community to its city and each other.
This event brings together examples, people with SMARTS working to bring indigenous, new, and ‘new to New Zealand’ technologies into our lives. They have expertise in collective housing, funding and impact investing, project and data management, Mātauranga Maori, governance and partnerships across society, public and private sectors. They will be providing their views, inspiration, frameworks, news about how they are taking action and ways to work together.
The presenters bring S – Specific domain expertise and achieve M – Measurable results on projects where the possibility of transformation is A – Achievable and R – Relevant. And, if given the appropriate resource allocation, their projects are T – Time-bound and S – Successful.  We know you can bring this too!
We will hear about what they have learned as pioneers in their domains as they forge new ground in changing conditions and take bold steps towards the #FutureWeWantToSee.
Come along to support their progress, find ways to collaborate and follow in their footsteps.
What to expect?
  • Four presentations
  • A panel discussion
  • A workshop session where you can contribute your own SMARTS

Alastair Rhodes – Bay Trust
‘Investing to impact the #FutureWeWantToSee’
Alastair was appointed CEO of BayTrust in 2015.  Over the last five years, he and his Board have significantly altered their investment portfolio to ensure it better aligns with their mission of making a positive social and environmental difference.  He is a member of RIAA’s impact investment committee and the NZ National Advisory Board on Impact Investments.
Before his appointment at BayTrust, he held executive roles in aviation and consulting and has a legal, commercial, and strategy background.  Alastair has a passion for impact and sustainable investing due to its ability to help drive a more inclusive and sustainable society and make the BOP a better place for our future generations.

Imogen Schoots – The Housing Innovation Society (ex: Panuku/AKL)
‘Creating living environments people love.’

At Panuku Development Auckland and City of Parramatta Council in Australia, Imogen successfully delivered cross-functional activation, operational and capital projects. Many of these projects were ground-breaking, requiring new partnership approaches to enable completion. She is also a Co-founder, Treasurer and Spokesperson of The Housing Innovation Society.
Coupled with a first-hand experience internationally of better ways of living apart from homeownership, Imogen combines her passions, talents, and education to bring ‘forever affordable home’ options to Aotearoa. Rising to the challenge of Aotearoa’s housing affordability crisis Imogen is taking a business case, initially seeded at Panuku, to its next stage, implementation. Her goal is to bring more secure, quality and forever affordable housing to the working poor, whose contributions are vital to a healthy society.
